HISTORY
Koottickal is a town at the base of Western Ghats mountain ranges in the Kottayam district, in the state of Kerala, in India. It is about 2,000 feet (610 m) above sea level and is situated on the eastern border of Kottayam District, 60 km from Kottayam, and around 6 km away from Mundakayam town on the NH 220 (Kottayam–Kumily Road).
This beautiful village is situated on the banks of Manimala River, which is a confluence of three rivers called Pullakayar, Kokkayar and Thalumkal Stream. Thus the origin of Manimala river starts from Koottickal town and it flows in between the Kottayam and Idukki districts of Kerala State and provides a geographical boundary for these two districts. Koottickal is surrounded by the Western Ghat Hills including the Urumbi Hills, Parathanam Hills and Poovanchi Hills. Rubber is a prime crop in Koottickal, one of the first places in India where it was cultivated. The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (105 km) and the nearest railway station is Kottayam (60 km)
Post-independence, Koottickal continued to evolve, focusing on sustainable development and community welfare. The Pravasi Welfare Association Koottickal (Koottickal Pravasi Junction) itself is a testament to the strong community spirit and the desire for collective upliftment among those who have migrated from the region.
The town's resilience is evident in its ability to adapt to natural challenges and economic shifts, always retaining its unique charm and strong community bonds. The history of Koottickal is not just a tale of a place, but a narrative of its people, their struggles, achievements, and unwavering spirit.
